Use the lens and sensor together

The simple angle estimate uses 2 × atan(sensor dimension ÷ (2 × focal length)). Enter the sensor width and height in millimetres and the lens focal length in millimetres. A larger focal length narrows the view; a larger sensor dimension widens it for the same lens.

Translate angle into scene width

At a chosen working distance, approximate scene span with 2 × distance × tan(field-of-view angle ÷ 2). This is a geometry aid for planning, not a promise that a person, plate, or object will contain enough usable pixels.
