Camera placement for identification is a scene-design problem: define the subject, distance, direction, lighting, movement, and obstruction before selecting resolution or lens.

- PURPOSE
- Write one sentence for what the operator must decide from the video: identify a face, read a plate, verify a handoff, observe a queue, or detect movement. Different tasks need different framing and tolerances.
- CONDITIONS
- A wide overview can show that something happened, but it may not retain enough pixels on the subject for identification. Use separate overview and detail roles when one view cannot do both jobs reliably. Measure the working distance and expected subject height at the point of interest. Note approach direction, camera height, viewing angle, glass or mesh, reflections, and the brightest and darkest parts of the scene.

Check geometry and light at the subject
Measure the working distance and expected subject height at the point of interest. Note approach direction, camera height, viewing angle, glass or mesh, reflections, and the brightest and darkest parts of the scene.
Test at the time of day and operating condition that creates the hardest image. A daytime screenshot is not evidence for night identification, backlight, rain, headlight glare, or motion blur.
Record limits instead of overpromising
Write what the view can establish and what it cannot. This makes the design useful for operators, installers, privacy review, and future troubleshooting.

Where should IP cameras be placed for identification?
Place the camera where the target approaches with a useful face or object angle, distance, height, light level, and movement speed. Define the image task first and verify it at the actual point of interest.
Does a higher-resolution camera guarantee identification?
No. Identification also depends on pixels on target, angle, motion, exposure, light, compression, focus, and obstruction. A wider view with more pixels does not automatically preserve the required detail.
