Security Camera Lighting Change Test: Before-and-After Checklist
A security camera lighting change test should compare the same target before and after a fixture, sign, daylight, or exterior-lighting change while checking exposure, WDR, IR, reflections, motion, and recorded detail.

- PURPOSE
- Replacing a light, adding a sign, changing a canopy, removing a fixture, or altering operating hours can change a camera result even when the camera and lens remain untouched. The new light may improve a target, create glare, change shadows, introduce flicker, or alter the point where day/night behavior switches.

Record the observed condition, date, device or configuration reference, reviewer, unresolved limitation, and next action. A repeatable acceptance record is more useful than a generic promise that a camera, recorder, service, or analytic will work in every scene.

Why should CCTV be retested after a lighting upgrade?
A new light changes contrast, shadows, color, reflections, motion visibility, exposure, WDR or IR behavior, and sometimes analytics. Retesting confirms the actual recorded scene rather than assuming the change improved it.
Can brighter lights make a security camera image worse?
Yes. A bright source can create glare, clip highlights, deepen shadows, reflect from glass or floors, or change exposure and motion behavior. Test the target and background at the real location.
